I have made a couple of Christmas decorations out of old jeans. It sounds a bit boring – however, the fabric has been decorated with embroided stars. Basically the embroided Christmas decorations are styrofoam balls covered with fabric from old jeans. If you want to make something similar than take a ball (mine is 60 mm diameter) and divide it into 4 equal sized pieces (like orange slices). Use parchment paper or similar and place it on top of the ball. Draw the outline of one of the orange slices onto the parchment paper and cut it out. Use this cut out as a template for cutting out 4 pieces of fabric. Remember to add appx. 1/2 cm of seam allowance before you cut the fabric.

Before you attach the fabric onto the balls you have to make your embroidery. I made my stars with ribbed spiderweb stitches, however, it can be whatever embroidery you like.

When you have finished the embroidery you are ready to attach the fabric onto the balls. Use a hobby knife to cut into the styrofoam ball following the lines you drew in the beginning. Place the fabric on top of the ball and press the edges into the grooves. Make sure the fabric is tight over the ball as it looks better.

I choose only to embroid on two out of the four pieces of fabric needed for each ball. This is of cause a question of taste, however, I think it is a bit too overwhelming if there is embroidery on all four sides. Having attached the fabric on the ball I glued a string in the groove to cover it up any mess there might be. The same sting is continue and thereby used to hang the ball on the Christmas three or wherever you want it. .
