Easter is very late this year and it is difficult to wait with the Easter decorations. With March comes the desire for spring and for me spring is associated with newly sprouted branches decorated with Easter eggs. Therefore I have made the first Easter eggs – even if Easter is not here for a while.
As with most of the things I make, the materials for the eggs are a combination of new and upcycled materials. It all started when I found some leftover embroidery thread in some fantastic colours. I started to play a little bit with different types of diagonal stitches on small pieces of fabric. The stitches on the egg above is called something as interesting as ‘Small Diagonal Stitches’. On the other eggs I used Milanese stitches and Jacquard stitches.
The embroidery samples turned out so nice that I had to use them for something – this is where the idea for the eggs developed. The small pieces of fabric were sewn together with pieces of fabric from old jeans. The back side of all the eggs is also jeans fabric and to make the eggs stiff I have put a piece of card between the two layers of fabric. The card I used is from the packing of some biscuits – no need to buy new card. In the end everything is sewn together on the machine. To make the edges nice I have sewn a thin, round leather string all the way around the eggs.
Now it would be great if the spring weather would come. While I wait I will cut some branches to hang my Easter eggs on. This way I can at least get spring in my living room if it will not come outside.
